Tabbloid – An RSS Reader For Your Grandma

HP has launched a useful service – Tabbloid. Basically, it is an RSS aggregator that will create a summary of your favorite RSS feeds and mail a daily tabloid in PDF format.

While it seems the advanced users will have a difficult time embracing it – after all, who needs it when you’ve got Google Reader – it may prove useful for one particular user type. Yes, it’s your grandparents.

With one-step setup and a friendly interface, this service may prove extremely useful if you’d like to keep your grandma updated with your latest posts.

Just add a feed URL (you may add a few, actually), enter your email, choose a delivery frequency (daily or weekly) and choose a time frame and you are set.

From this point on your grandma will be proud, provided you taughted her how to use email.

Free Space On Your Desktop With RocketDock

Monitor Website Changes with ChangeDetection

Have you ever bookmarked a website, just to keep returning to it in search for new content? Sure, nowadays almost every website has an RSS feed. But what if an RSS reader is not exactly your cup of tea? Or that particular site doesn’t offer any kind of update service?

This is exactly what ChangeDetection is for. It will alert you when new content is posted on your favorite, but “RSSless” website.

First, enter a page address (URL) and your email. Then choose your preferred method to get change detection alerts. You can either get those by email or, again, by RSS and choose from daily to weekly alerts. That’s it.

Here are a few ideas where you can use ChangeDetection: Google jobs page, your favorite Ebay search or, maybe, keep yourself updated on that H1N1 flu.

Twitter Tip: Auto-Greet Your Followers

Before you rush into auto-replying your new Twitter followers, bear this in mind: it’s not cool DMing your new friends with an affiliate link. It will get your unfollowed, period.

Having said that, you would probably want to thank your new addition to Twitter friends for following you. How would you do that automatically? Well, this is what TweetLater is for.

Open an account and add your Twitter username into ‘Accounts’ tab.

Then mark the ‘Auto Welcome’ radio button and choose your greeeting message. Remember, you’d probably want to thank the followers, not stuff them with links.

Windows 7: How to Display ‘Show Desktop’ Button on Taskbar

Windows 7 removed the support for the ‘Quick Launch‘ menu on the taskbar. As a result, you won’t be able to find that ‘Show Desktop’ button that we all grew accustomed to since Windows 98 SE.

But no worries – you can sort of bring it back. Here how:

1. Right click on the taskbar, select ‘Toolbars‘ menu and then click on ‘New Toolbar‘.

2. In ’Folder‘ field type: “%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch” (including the quotes).

3. Click ‘Select folder‘.

You will now find an additional toolbar on your taskbar:

To make it more “retro” style, right-click on the new toolbar and uncheck the following: ‘Show Text’ and ‘Show Title’:

You can also choose ‘View–>Small Icons’ in case you need. Now you are done:

Down For Everyone or Just Me?

If we received a penny for each twitter user asking whether service X is down, we’d probably get rich. Quickly.

Now, instead of asking your Twitter followers if Gmail is down also for them, you can use ‘Down for Everyone or Just Me‘ service.

Just punch-in a website address and check if Gmail is really down or is it just you (or your provider).

2 Useful Chrome Extensions

One of the Chrome disadvantages is a lack of extensions. Sure, Google is working on it, but this issue still remains the main obstacle on the way to switching to Google browser.

Well, latest Chrome Beta offers a limited support for extensions. To activate extensions support, right-click on Chrome’s shortcut, choose ’Properties’ and add ‘–enable-extensions’ command line switch to ‘target’ field. Like this:

You have now enabled the extensions. Restart the browser for changes to take effect.

Pingdom – now also for free

Pingdom, a popular site-monitoring service is now offering free accounts. A free account allows you to monitor one website only, while paid accounts offer 5 to 30 checks for $10 to $40 a month respectively.

As a bonus, free account also offers up to 20 SMS alerts. You’ll get those on your cell if your website is down. You can, of course, recharge the SMS credits for an additional charge.

The main reason we use this service is its impressive client list, which includes TechCrunch, Twitter, Mashable and Alexa.

5 Tools to Backup Your Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and more

It is no secret that most PC users don’t backup their data regularly. After all, hard drive crashes, power outages or floods will never happen to them. Or so they believe.

That being said, this post will provide you with five simple, yet powerful tools to back up your online life. By “online life” I mean your email, online documents, tweets, Facebook profile and essentially everything that defines your online presence.

Tools

Gmail – Starting January, Gmail allows offline access to your email. Basically it means that your email messages can be stored on your PC . Next time Gmail is unavailable, you can still access your data.

Google Docs – Easier than ever. Just click on “Offline” shortcut on the top menu and keep a local copy of your documents.

Twitter – Backup your tweets, followers, DMs and @replies easily with Tweetake.

Your blog – Backup your blog with BlogBackupOnline. A free service that will monitor your feed and backup the posts.

Flickr – Your Flickr photos can be easily backed up using FlickrEdit application and as a bonus, you can use FlickrEdit to search for images by tags, description and dates.

Last but not least – Facebook. FriendCSV will export all your FaceBook contacts to a nice Excel file.
