How to Put a Video in a Google Doc

By Admin - Tuesday 21 September 2021 No Comments

Unfortunately, you can't embed a video in Google Docs. However, you can add an image and create a play icon at the top to link that image to your video URL. However, this workaround won't work if the video you're adding to the document doesn't have a URL.

1.

Take a screenshot of the video. Starts and pauses video playback, and allows you to take a screenshot for use in your document. You can switch the video display to full screen to create a still image suitable for your work.
If you're using Windows 10, press Win + Shift + S to open the Crop & Draw tool and use Crop Rectangle or Full Screen to capture a still image of your video (copy and paste to clipboard doc.).
If you're using a Mac, press Command + Ctrl + Shift + 3 to put a full screen on the clipboard.

2.

Go to https://docs.google.com/ and sign in when prompted. You can use any web browser to access Google Docs and add images and links.

3.

Open the file that you want to add the video to. In the Google Docs library, click once to open the item. Alternatively, you can create a new document by clicking the + icon in the lower right corner.

4.

Use the drawing tools to add a playback symbol to the image. Usually, just pasting a still image from the clipboard doesn't mean you want others to click your image to view the video. You need to add an icon to the picture to indicate that you should click the picture.
Go to the Insert tab and choose Draw> New to open the Google Docs drawing tool.
Press Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (Mac) to paste the picture from the clipboard into the drawing area. If you have saved the screenshot as an image file on your computer, you can click the image icon to upload the file from your file manager.
Click the Shapes tool to view the different shapes available. The play icon, which tells the user that the picture should be played by clicking on it, looks like an arrow inside the circle. You can add an image of a circle and then add an arrow shape to make it stand out with different fill colors. This tool does not have the arrow shape of most rendering symbols, so you can copy the symbol image from an Internet search and paste it into your drawing.
Alternatively, use the circle shape to create a circle and then use the Polyline tool to create the arrow shape. Change the fill color of each layer to make it stand out.
Click Save & Close to save the drawing and insert it into your document.

5.

Get the URL of the video that you want to add to the document. When you get a YouTube video, click the share icon to get the URL and click the Start box to start playing the video at a specific point.
For example, if the reference for a shared video is long and awkward, you can click the Start button to have the video play after the reference.

6.

Right-click the document image. A menu appears next to the cursor.

7.

Click Link. You can also press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl / Cmd + K to display the Add Link window.

8.

Paste the copied URL into the text box and click Apply. Every time someone views your document, it has a play icon so they'll likely click the image. Click here for a link to the video.
Since there is no way to embed the video in Google Docs, this solution allows you to add a link to the video from an external source like YouTube.
